Fully-Funded Scholarship Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) for PhD Programs
The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Graduate School is opening its fully-funded PhD program Winter Admissions Selection (WAS) for the academic years 2024 and 2025. The program is open to students who have completed a Bachelor of Science (BSc), Masters of Science (MSc), or equivalent degree in science and engineering or related fields, or are expected to graduate before the date of enrollment at the Graduate School. Female students and applicants from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply for Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Scholarship for PhD Programs.
The program offers a variety of PhD degree programs in various science and technology fields of study. Accepted students will receive a financial support package that includes course fees, annual allowance, relocation support, personal computer, educational travel and conference expenses, and the opportunity to join research assistantship, teaching assistantship, and internship with extra support.
The program will take approximately five years, depending on the applicants’ educational background and research area. Applicants who have graduated with an MSc degree may not be required to take all courses.
To apply, please visit the OIST official website and click on the Apply to PhD information page. Click on the application page provided at the end of the information page. Applicants are suggested to use a computer to complete the application. Create a new account using email, first name, and last name. Prepare the required documents in English and upload them to the related section. Complete the application and submit them before the closing date of admission.
Required documents include:
- Copies of academic transcripts (with English translation for transcripts written in another language)
- Graduation diploma or certificate of enrollment from the institution with expected graduation date (if the applicant has not graduated yet)
- Applicants personal statement explaining their scientific interests, aspirations, and expectations during the program in under 400 words and 2500 characters
- Copies of passport or identification documents (if the applicant did not have any passport yet)
- At least two recommendation letters from appropriate academic connections, a maximum of five letters.
- Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL iBT or IELTS score that is published in the last 2 years)
- Optional documents including GRE or other test scores, publications abstract, oral presentations, or other proof of applicant’s achievements
The selection process includes for Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Scholarship:
- Shortlisting of applicants based on the criteria
- Information session week for shortlisted applicants
- Zoom test session for shortlisted applicants
- At least 4 interviews for shortlisted applicants
- Announcement of final candidates at the end of February 2024
- Chosen candidates are allowed to choose the term of enrollment (the academic year 2024 or 2025)
The graduate school will accept 60 students. The application process for the Winter admission period will be closed on November 15, 2023 at 23.59 JST (UTC+9).
